How do you steer a hot air balloon?

Navigating a hot air balloon presents a unique challenge compared to other aircraft due to its lack of conventional steering mechanisms. Instead, hot air balloons rely on directional control by ascending or descending into different wind currents at various altitudes. While officially classified as non-steerable by FAA standards, skilled balloonists can manipulate their balloons to a limited extent, primarily by adjusting altitude.

Mastering the art of steering a hot air balloon to a specific destination requires a deep understanding of wind patterns at different elevations throughout the flight journey. Balloon pilots manipulate altitude by either increasing it by heating the air inside the balloon with burners or decreasing it by venting hot air from the top. Ultimately, they navigate horizontally by leveraging wind currents and skillfully adjusting their altitude.

What about bad weather and hot air ballooning?

At Gateway Hot Air Balloon Adventures, we prioritize safety by avoiding flights in adverse weather like rain, thunderstorms, or high winds. Our experienced pilots consult various weather resources to assess conditions, considering factors like wind, temperature, pressure, rain, and fog. If a flight is canceled due to weather, we’ll reschedule or offer a refund if needed.

Why do hot air balloons fly early in the morning and late in the evening?

The optimal times for flying are sunrise and sunset. During these periods, winds are typically calm and favorable for ballooning. Daytime flights are rarely done due to fast and variable winds caused by uneven sun-heated ground.

Why is there a maximum weight limit for passengers going on balloon rides?

Just like other aircraft, balloons must adhere to weight and balance limits. Passenger weight is influenced by temperature, altitude, and balloon size. For shared rides each passenger may not weigh over 245 pounds. For shared flights, each passenger may not weigh more than 275 pounds.

What is the balloon flight like?

As the balloon rises gradually, many passengers hardly feel the departure from the ground. The basket remains steady during the flight without swinging or rocking. Once airborne, passengers often relax, taking photos without holding on. Pilots adjust altitude to navigate using various wind patterns, so expect changes in height during the journey.

Do you need a license to pilot a hot air balloon?

Certainly! Like all aircraft, hot-air balloons are regulated by the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA). To become a licensed hot-air balloon pilot, one must undergo training with an instructor, pass an exam covering air rules, meteorology, radio communication, and balloon equipment, and demonstrate flight skills to a designated FAA examiner. Our pilots are commercially trained and hold class 2 medical certifications.

What if I have a fear of heights?

No need to worry! Many people are scared of heights. Fun fact: most balloon pilots are too. When flying in a hot air balloon, there is no sense of movement since we fly with wind. Ballooning is very smooth and quiet, so generally, the only movement you will feel is at landing or if someone moves around in the basket. Taking a hot air balloon ride is one of the safest forms of flying. We put your safety first and pride ourselves on our well-maintained equipment.

Can I join a balloon ride if I am pregnant?

Most doctors recommend against balloon flights if you’re pregnant or suspect pregnancy due to potential bumpy landings. Consider a ballooning date a few months after welcoming your little one.

Want a balloon tether?

Tethers involve tying the balloon to three points with ropes, allowing approximately 75 guests per hour to experience a short ascent. It is ideal for events, parties, or grand openings. Tethers occur within two hours of sunrise or start 1.5 hours before sunset. We avoid tethering during midday due to unpredictable winds and thermal conditions. The area must be at least 200′ x 200′ and clear of obstructions like power lines or trees. While grass is preferred, tethers can be done on pavement if necessary. To book a tether, please consult us for arrangements and contract details.

Do you have non-alcoholic drinks?

Bottled water and sparkling cider are provided post-flight for those who prefer to not drink alcohol. You are also welcome to bring your own refreshments if you prefer.

Physical requirements to fly in a Gateway hot air balloon?

Gateway Hot Air Balloon Adventures welcomes guests ages six and up, but remember there are no seats in the basket. Entering and exiting the basket involves stepping into footholds on the side, similar to mounting a horse. Standing for the duration of the flight (about an hour) is required, with bolsters provided for support. Sunrise flights are recommended for those over 75 or parents with children under 9. Children aged 0-6 cannot fly due to safety reasons. For shared rides, each passenger may not weigh more than 225 pounds. For private flights, each passenger may not weigh more than 275 pounds. Guests must be able to sign a declaration affirming good health, including no recent surgeries, no current pregnancy or serious medical conditions. Consider consulting a doctor if you have concerns.

What should I wear on my hot air balloon flight?

Here are some clothing tips for your balloon ride. Wear closed-toed shoes for dewy mornings. Sunrise flights might feel chilly on the ground, but the burners keep you warm once in the air, so dress in layers for the cool mornings. Consider wearing a hat for added comfort. In the summer, during sunset flights, it will be warm. Keep in mind that you need to be able to climb over the side of the basket, so skirts and dresses are not recommended. Dress as you would for an outdoor hike or picnic.

What is the cancellation policy?

Guests can cancel without penalty up to 48 hours before the flight. However, no credit is given for cancellations with less notice or no-shows. We aim to reschedule for weather cancellations, but if a guest cannot reschedule after a weather cancellation, we will offer a refund.

How big are hot air balloons?

Hot air balloons come in various sizes, depending on the desired passenger capacity. They are measured in cubic feet. Our current ride balloons measure 105,000cf and 90,000cf. Our larger balloon can accommodate 3-4 passengers, and our smaller balloon carries a pilot plus 2 passengers. We also have a fun personal balloon of 42,000cf that only carries the pilot. The smallest balloons on the market carry only a pilot, while large commercial ones can accommodate 20 or more passengers.

How much does a hot air balloon cost?

New hot air balloons, like boats and cars, come in different sizes and with different available options. Sport balloons cost around $45,000, carrying the pilot and 2-3 passengers. Larger ones for 4-6 passengers, plus pilot, range from $80,000 to $100,000. Commercial balloons for 10-15 passengers can cost even more. Used hot air balloons are available, generally costing between $12,000 and $20,000.

What is a hot air balloon chase crew?

Our chase crew comprises employees tasked with safely launching the hot air balloon. Their responsibilities include assembling and preparing the balloon, trailing it in the chase vehicle, talking with landowners for landing permissions, packing up the equipment, and ensuring the property remains undisturbed after landing. Without our chase crew, we could not do what we do, so be sure to tell them thank you for their hard work when you see them.

Should we tip our balloon pilot and chase crew?

As with any service, it’s customary to offer a gratuity, typically 10-20% of the total price. Tips are divided equally among the pilot and crew. You can bring cash or add a tip to the card used for booking.

Does the balloon land back where we launch from?

Usually, we land 5-7 miles from where we take off. Occasionally favorable winds let us return to the starting point—every pilot’s dream!

When do you cancel a balloon flight?

Hot air ballooning is weather-dependent. We avoid flying in rain, fog, snow, strong winds, or if there’s a risk of thunderstorms. If your flight needs to be rescheduled due to weather, there’s no extra charge. If you’re unable to reschedule, we offer full refunds.

Do you offer military discounts?

Absolutely! For the military discount (10%), apply the code “Mil” during checkout and present your Military ID upon check-in for your flight. Discounts cannot be combined with any other offers. This discount is extended to military members and one additional guest. For instance, if you booked four guests, two would receive the discount, and the other two would pay the regular price. We’re grateful for your service!
